1. Adoptions are limited to the eastern Washington
area so the homes can be previewed, to eliminate
extreme stress on the animals in prolonged
transit, and to facilitate adoptive home revisits.
2. Plank, farm wire, high tensile (New Zealand),
barbless wire are all acceptable forms of fencing.
Electrified temp fencing used for strip
grazing is fine but not as the primary, perimeter fence. Ditto
traditional electric wire which is good
to use as a deterrent to chewing, but does not replace a secure,
safely constructed wood, wire mesh,
or high tensile fence. Picketing in lieu of perimeter fencing is
not acceptable.
3. Shelter: Minimum of a three-sided shelter or loafing shed.
4. Pasture: Each animal should have a minimum of approximately one acre to run and browse in.
5. Breeding: We do not adopt donkeys out for breeding purposes.
6. We do not adopt out JACKS. Johns (geldings), yes.
7. We generally do not adopt out single donkeys unless
they are going to a home in need of a companion
for another equine. If the resident
donkey, mule or horse is a stud, we cannot allow adoption to that
home until two months after the resident
equine is gelded. Also we will not place bonded donkeys
into separate homes. Its important to
note that donkeys are herd animals and instinctively require the
company of their own kind. Single donkeys
live lonely, boring lives and seldom are as emotionally,
mentally, or physically healthy as donkeys
in a group. As good as one's intentions are, humans can
rarely fill the void of a stable mate.
8. Delivery: BRRRO cannot provide delivery for your
adopted burro(s). You will have to arrange for
your own safe mode of transportation.
BRRRO reserves the right to refuse release of the burro(s) if
the truck, trailer, or road conditions
are deemed unsafe.
9. Adoption Fees: 1st donkey: $203.00 which includes
a copy of The Definitive Donkey and a year's
subscription to a bi-monthly publication,
The Brayer. Every donkey thereafter: $175.00 These
adoption fees are tax deductible.
Your contribution goes directly to feed and house the unwanted
donkeys left behind.
Once you have returned your application,
you are on our adopter list unless otherwise notified. But
the next move is up to you! You may
visit our facilities, which are 10 miles southwest of Cheney,
Washington, by appointment
("No Shows" will be dropped from adoption list).
